Ontario Power Generating Station injects clean ozone gas into the cooling water from Lake Ontario to control the infestation of Zebra mussels. The used cooling water is returned to a sump prior to discharge back into the lake. During this transfer, off-gassing of dirty ozone gas occurs. OPG required a method of removing this dirty gas from the sump before discharging the air into the work environment. Additionally, the system design had to overcome the problem associated with disposal of spent filter packs and offer an economical filter life cycle. The system also had to offer variable flow capability which would extend the carbon life in the filters.

The solution was two PlymoVent Model ME-31 modular filter units, mounted in tandem (split air stream) @ 1,250 CFM each. The system design called for individual flow control with separate Model FUA-4700 3.0HP fans and Model AD-250 air control dampers fitted to each filter air intake.

The absorption filter packs had to be re-fillable, reduce operating costs and eliminate the problems associated with the disposal of impregnated carbon media filters. Each filter unit has three carbon packs with 110 kg of granular carbon in each pack, a total of six packs in the system. Air speed across each module is reduced to 312 FPM to increase contaminant dwell time and ensure that the desired output levels are achieved which are monitored by a thermo environmental instrument. The main air duct design is slightly elevated from the sump hood to the units to allow any condensate moisture to drain back into the sump.

Continental Fan's TID In-line Centrifugal Fan is available in diameters from 12" through 24", with capacities ranging to 4000 cfm. The TID inline centrifugal fan utilizes the TEK backward cured airfoil impeller. Custom designs and all aluminum fan housing construction are available. The APR-410 Control provides full capacity modulation for all sizes of direct-expansion air conditioning systems that use R-410A non-ozone depleting hydrofluorocarbon refrigerant. The control also eliminates many common maintenance problems associated with excess system capacity such as coil icing, liquid slugging, and excessive compressor recycling.

The Weller WSA350 Smoke Absorber removes flux fumes from the benchtop by drawing the smoke through an activated carbon filter. Powered by an exceptionally quiet fan, the unit can process up to 1.37 cubic meters of air per minute. The collector can be easily adjusted to multiple positions, optimizing its fume-absorbent performance.

GrayWolf introduces an enhanced monitoring kit for measuring key indoor air quality parameters. Bluetooth wireless communicates information from probe to Windows Mobile Pocket PC or to Windows Notebook computers, eliminating the need for cables. The DirectSense-IAQW measures Carbon Dioxide for determining the amount of dilution air supplied to each space. Carbon monoxide, temperature and relative humidity are also measured. The probes have a range of up to 9 meters from the mobile PC. Probes may be positioned out in the occupied zone, and the mobile computer may be hidden or locked up while it collects trend data over hours, days or weeks.

Eurovac's portable filtering unit, ROLL-OUT, is designed to exhaust and filter dry impurities. A highly efficient filtering cartridge (99% @ 1 micron) makes it possible to use the unit for such processes as welding smoke, grinding, polishing, cutting of metals and plastics and more. The ROLL-OUT is not designed for filtering the air from corrosive, caustic and explosive gases and dusts. Its housing is manufacturing of welded sheet steel and powder coat painted. Inside there is an aluminum mesh prefilter which protects the cartridge from sparks and prefilters the air. Next there is a cartridge filter and a final carbon after-filter at the outlet. The OdorGuard® rigid cell filters offer extended surface chemical filtration. These self-supporting rigid box filters are suitable for pharmaceutical, microelectronic and cleanroom applications, in addition to HVAC installations. The filters are available utilizing granular activated carbon or a 50/50 blend of carbon and activated alumina impregnated with 5% potassium permanganate.
