CONTACTLESS POSITION SENSING TECHNOLOGY FOR VARIETY OF AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS

Providing design engineers with a device suitable for a multitude of automotive sensing applications, TT electronics OPTEK Technology has been selected by a major North American OEM to supply chassis sensors using the company's patented Autopad™ technology. Autopad is a non-contact precision inductive sensing technology capable of providing absolute position sensing as well as relative displacement feedback.

According to Dale Teeters, automotive business unit director for OPTEK Technology, Autopad is a cost-effective versatile technology that can be used for a wide range of automotive and vehicle position sensing applications, including chassis sensors. "For chassis sensors, Autopad provides a linear ratiometric output signal relative to rotary or displacement ," said Teeters. "This provides the necessary feedback for load leveling and active suspension systems."

The program, one of the current wins for OTEK's Autopad™ technology, is anticipated to generate more than $14 million in sales, Teeter explained. Shipments are expected to begin in 2009 for the 2010 model year.

In addition to chassis height sensors, the Autopad™ technology is ideal for headlamp leveling, ride height and suspension control, power lift gate sensors, pedal and steering sensors, engine and emissions control, PRNDL (gearshift) shifters, transmission sensors, and vehicle user interfaces.

Autopad exhibits a linear sensing range of 20-220mm, with angle sensing at 360°, 2x180°, 3x120°, and 4x90°. Accuracy is better than 1% and typical linearity is +/-1%. Measurement speed for the device is less than 1 ms, with a current consumption of less than 10mA. Operating temperature range is 40°C to +150°C. Autopad technology features analog, ratiometric, PWM and digital outputs.

PRESSURE SENSOR

This wet/wet differential pressure sensor is ideal for monitoring the cleanliness of filters in either liquid or gas applications. When installed within a water filtration system, the Model 5000 can detect the difference between the upstream pressure, that drives the water through the filter, and the downstream pressure, that leads the filtered water through the system, to notify the system when the filter is clogged. With a 24VDC supply powering the sensor and a selected 4-20mA output signal, the sensor can be calibrated with a 100 PSI line pressure and a 20 PSI differential pressure.

PARTICULATE SENSOR

The PMS Particulate Sensor is reliable in operation and requires minimal maintenance. This particulate sensor employs a field-proven combination of passive-induction and protected-probe technologies. As particles flow near and around the probe, minute currents are dynamically induced into the probe by flowing particulate. A DSP processes the signal into an absolute output that is reasonably linear to mass. Protective-layers over the probe work in combination with induction-sensing to ensure reliable operation with all types of particulate including moist powders and highly conductive dusts. Maintenance is minimal and there is no need for an air purge. For durability, the sensors are passive and free of electronics.

INSTRUMENT & CONTROL SWITCHES

Configurable to meet the needs of a variety of specific utility applications, Electroswitch detent switches are available in two basic models: Series 24 and Series 31. Both feature double-wiping, silver-plated contact for long life and terminal screws for easy installation. Instrument Switch configurations have an option for "make-before-break" (shorting) contacts, a positive positioning detent mechanism, and a common input tap switch arrangement that allows sequential connection to several lines using the same switching deck. Control Switch configurations feature spring return to normal (vertical) position.
